MEN’S PELVIC HEALTH

SUNSHINE COAST PHYSIO FOR MEN

Your dedicated men’s pelvic floor physio

Firstly, thank you for being here. Men’s pelvic health is rarely spoken about, it takes courage to seek support. So whether you’re experiencing chronic pelvic pain, find yourself busting for the toilet the moment your key slides in the front door or you’re in prep for, or recovery-mode from, surgery – welcome.

Your pelvic floor plays an important role in bladder and bowel control, as well as sexual function and core stability. So when these muscles are tight or weakened, the symptoms can be deeply frustrating and even life-altering.

From noticing some drops on your underwear post-bathroom visit, to long sits on the toilet with no outcome. Pain during ejaculation or even unexplained lower back or hip pain… these can all be reasons to potentially book with a men’s pelvic health physio. Not sure? Phone the clinic on 0402 144 046 and I would be more than happy to answer your questions.

We take a compassionate yet professional approach and openly welcome men into our clinic. Postgraduate training, the latest research and your personal symptoms join forces to light our path forward.

Our first consult is one hour, in-clinic on the Sunshine Coast or via telehealth and costs $245. You may be eligible for a rebate through Medicare if you have a GPCCMP or through Private Health. I might recommend a pelvic floor assessment as part of your treatment plan. For your comfort, I offer both internal and external pelvic floor assessment options. The power is always in your hands to choose if an internal pelvic floor assessment (via digital rectal examination) or an ultrasound exam is the best choice for you. Your comfort is always my priority.

Follow-up appointments can be booked from $160 in-person or through Telehealth.

Pelvic Pain

For men, pelvic pain can present as throbbing, pressure or even burning in the pelvic region including the penis, scrotum or perineum (area between the penis and anus). This pain may arise during urination, sexual intercourse or even sitting.

Men with pelvic pain may experience more than one pelvic pain condition. Urinary symptoms such as urgency to get to the toilet and going to the toilet more often commonly coexist.

To avoid retreating from your social life, cutting back exercise and refraining from intercourse, which can all affect physical and mental health, let’s work to get you back on track.

Men’s pelvic health physio can help with:

  • Pelvic floor assessment
  • Pelvic floor manual therapy
  • Optimise bladder & bowel function
  • Relaxation and breathing techniques

Incontinence

Age and surgery (such as a prostatectomy) are just some of the contributing factors for incontinence in men. And while some will take a trip to the GP to discuss, the fact you’re here means you’re ready to take action – even better.

Urinary and faecal incontinence can greatly impact your lifestyle. What can begin as an unexpected passing of urine can develop into more impactful symptoms.

Whether you have recently noticed symptoms like extra urgency to get to the toilet, or brushed off concerns for a while now and are ready to investigate, let’s make a plan to move forwards.

Men’s pelvic health physio can help with:

  • Post-surgery care
  • Pelvic floor rehab
  • Lifestyle management
  • Healthy bladder & bowel habits

Bowel dysfunction

While incontinence refers to the involuntary loss of control of stools or gas, bowel dysfunction relates to difficulty with bowel actions. This may include straining, incomplete evacuation, haemhorroids and constipation.

Nothing is off limits during your consultation, I am here to answer all questions and tailor a personal plan to get you back at the dinner table.

Men’s pelvic health physio can help with:

  • Exercise support
  • Pelvic floor exercises
  • Healthy bowel habits
  • Bowel management plans

Sexual dysfunction

There’s often feelings of shame or embarrassment for men experiencing sexual dysfunction. Though know that it is more common than you might think. In 2022, 64.7% of men in Australia reported at least one sexual difficulty.

Erectile dysfunction, pelvic pain and post-prostatectomy recovery are all conversations that are welcomed at Maia Pelvic Health. Let’s curate action steps forward to work through your symptoms.

Men’s pelvic health physio can help with:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Post-prostatectomy recovery
  • Lower abdominal, rectal, testicle or penile pain

Pre & post-prostatectomy rehab

A prostatectomy surgery involves surgically removing part or all of the prostate gland. Which, in itself, is a big transformation to experience within your body. Mentally, physically, and as you’ve perhaps learnt – in recovery, too. With this dramatic, anatomical shift comes some side-effects that are not always fully expected.

Urinary incontinence (or leakage) is common after prostate surgery. It may be a mild problem that requires protective pads to manage for a few weeks. Or, for more severe cases protective pads may be required for up to a year (or beyond). Please know that while loss of bladder control can be distressing, the support of a pelvic physio can help improve symptoms through learning correct techniques and pelvic floor exercises.

Whether it’s before your operation or you’re now managing the symptoms post, it’d be my privilege to work with you through this new phase of life.

Men’s pelvic health physio can help with:

  • Pelvic floor assessment
  • Tailored pelvic floor exercises
  • Graded return to exercise plan
  • Healthy bladder and bowel habits
