  • Pelvic organ prolapse is a common condition, impacting 1 in 2 adult women. Prolapse occurs when one or more of the pelvic organs, including the bladder, bowel, uterus or small intestine descend in the pelvis as a result of stretched and/or weakened pelvic floor muscles, facscia and ligaments.

    Types of prolapse include:

    • Anterior vaginal wall prolapse (cystocele)

    • Posterior vaginal wall prolapse (rectocele)

    • Uterine prolapse

    Common symptoms of prolapse include:

    • Vaginal heaviness, pressure and/or bulging that is often worse with physical activity

    • Pelvic discomfort

    • Dyspareunia

    • Difficulty controlling your bladder and/or bowel

    • Incomplete bladder emptying, incontinence and/or UTI’s.

Symptoms vary amongst women, and can significantly impact quality of life.

    Causes of prolapse include:

    • Pregnancy and childbirth

    • Aging and menopause

    • Obesity

    • Chronic cough

    • Chronic constipation and straining

    • Repetitive heavy lifting.

There are many ways pelvic floor physiotherapy can be effective in the conservative management of prolapse. First, a detailed assessment is undertaken to determine the impact your prolapse and symptoms are having on your quality of life. Then, an individualised plan is recommended, which may include the following:

    • Lifestyle advice tailored to you with a goal to minimise any modifiable risk factors contributing to your symptoms (e.g. constipation/straining)

    • A tailored pelvic floor program to improve the support of your pelvic organs

    • Pessary fitting. A pessary is a removable silicone device that is inserted into the vagina to support the vaginal walls and/or uterus. This can help to reduce symptoms of vaginal heaviness and bulging. Pessaries come in many different shapes and sizes to cater to each individual’s needs and anatomy.
